Brahmasree Itoozhi Vaidyar Krishnan Namboothiri
The founding patriarch of the Itoozhi Illam is considered to be Brahmasree Itoozhi Vaidyar Krishnan Namboothiri in the 18th century. The Itoozhi Namboothiri Family is considered to be one of the authentic Vaidya Kudumbam in Ayurvedic Science. Legend has it that the Itoozhi Namboothiris were the chosen physicians of Perinjalloor village, founded by the warrior-saint of Indian mythology, Sage Parashurama.
The unique methodology of holistic treatment by the physicians from Itoozhi Illam have been admired and adapted by many of their peers and still remains the most popular family of holistic healers in the Malabar traditions.
Brahmasree Itoozhi Vaidyar Valiya Madhavan Namboothiri (1877-1937)
Brahmasree Itoozhi Vaidyar Valiya Madhavan Namboothiri was born into an environment that witnessed the family’s traditional generosity in donating wealth as well as the knowledge of Ayurveda reduce the once-stately illam to dire financial straits.
Showing an extraordinary interest in serving others and a sharp acumen in academics, he immersed himself in the traditional treatises, and along with the collective traditional wisdom from the learned elders in the illam, soon rose to be one of the most famous and popular Ayurveda vaidyars in Malabar, at the young age of 25 !
The Kerala Charithra (1946), in a tribute to the Vaidyar, mentions that “there came a stage when the regional squires, provincial heads and the rich feudal lords refused to be treated by anyone other than Brahmasree Itoozhi Vaidyar Valiya Madhavan Namboothiri” . Such was his popularity.

The life of Brahmasree Madhavan Namboothiri is a very interesting and inspiring one. He played a key role in the social, cultural, academic and economic development of Mayyil. Deeply proficient in the ancient Ayurvedic treatises, he was revered by his peers of ancient Kerala.
He was not only an Ayurvedic physician but a researcher, social reformer and a true visionary who left his impressions in the medical and the social arena as well.
As per the advice of his guru, Swami Narayanji Maharaj, he concentrated his efforts at Mayyil and established the popular Itoozhi Namboothiri’s Ayurveda Vaidyasala .
