The world celebrated International Woman’s day on March 8th as every year and the focus was of course on the various issues that women face today in the society and deliberations on possible solutions. This brings us to a very critical issue of womanhood that impacts not only the woman herself but also the society at large. The fact that only women can conceive is nature’s best gift to women and when medical issues prevent her from conceiving, it is tragic, because becoming a mother is a woman’s best moment and a matter of great pride, something the men can never claim to do.
Infertility is a health condition in which a woman is unable to conceive or suffers frequent miscarriages. The most common causes of female infertility include hormonal imbalance, physical injury and lifestyle related issues which may lead to the malfunctioning of the ovaries. In this, either the ovaries stop functioning before menopause or they don’t release healthy eggs. Ayurveda provides safe remedies to enhance fertility.
There are various ayurvedic herbs that are used since ancient days to boost fertility in women. Ayurvedic experts suggest that the herb Aswagandha (Withania somnifera) is very helpful in female infertility treatment. Ashwagandha derives its name from Sanskrit words ‘Ashwa’ which means ‘horse’ and ‘gandha’ which means ‘smell’ which collectively symbolises giving energy and vitality of a horse. Ayurvedic experts say that Ashwagandha is rich in biologically active substances as it is composed of both macro and micro-elements, amino acids, peptides, lipids, and the bases of nucleic acids. The root of the Ashwaganda plant is said to have the most therapeutic benefits.
Ashwagandha enhances the endocrine system and thus helps regulating the thyroid and adrenal glands. These glands are responsible for maintaining the balance of the reproductive hormones and hence play a very important role in the treatment of female infertility. Ashwagandha is also very rich in iron. Women suffering from iron deficient anemia might have issues to conceive or may face frequent miscarriages. Ashwagandha also has a calming effect on the nervous system and hence is helpful in treatment of depression, anxiety, fatigue, stress-induced insomnia, and nervous exhaustion; all of which are common in females suffering from infertility. Various Ayurvedic hospitals in Kerala treat female infertility and are a great source of happiness for families across the globe.
