For this purpose non-poisonous leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) are used.

Panchakarma is a complex process. Therefore, to get the best out of it, Ayurveda prescribes few preparatory treatments. Snehapanam and Swedanam are two among them. Snehapanam is an internal treatment by taking medicated oils and ghee. Swedam is the external massage of the body using hot cloth bundles. In addition, this also includes medicated warm oil bath or steam bath. Similarly, Ayurveda uses medicated hot water bath in some cases. This treats peptic duodenal ulcers, skin problems and degenerative diseases. Similarly, Abhyangam uses special Ayurvedic herbal oils for the body. As a result, it prevents early ageing and relieves muscular aches and pain.

The Concept of Kizhi

Kizhi literally means a cloth bolus. In Ayurveda treatment, it is a medicated pack in the shape of a ball. The packs are made up of rice ( Njavarakizhi ) or herbal powder (Choorna Kizhi) or herbal leaves (Ilakizhi ). This treatment is useful in musculo-skeletal disorders, degenerative conditions and neurological problems.

Ilakizhi uses herbal leaves and the procedure is like Podikizhi.

To make Nvara Kizhi, boil rice and cook in a mixture of milk and a decoction. Pack it in cloth and tie into bundle. Apply this on the head and body. The patient lies on the table on his back. Repeat this until the cloth bundle becomes empty.

The two principal methods are Shirodhara and Thakaradhara. For instance, Shirodhara is pouring medicated fluids-oils, milk or buttermilk on the forehead, in a special way. Ayurveda uses medicated oils as this is the most common method. The treatments start with oil application on head and body. However, Thakradhara is pouring medicated buttermilk on the forehead. The treatments start with oil application on head and body. Also, tying a cloth piece around the patients’ forehead protects the eyes.

Snehapaana consists of two words – sneha and paana. Sneha means the oily material like ghee (clarified butter), sesame oil or marrow. Similarly, Paana means to drink. Snehapaana uses Ghee (clarified butter). This process is the first step in preparing the person for an intensive cleansing of the system. This cleansing includes Vamana (inducing vomiting) or Virechana (inducing purgation). Specifically, this helps in stabilizing the doshas of the body.

The concept of Pichu

Pichu is an external oil application, superior to abhyanga in effect. This is good for the head, low back etc. Moreover, this is a major treatment in Ayurveda. However, at times Ayurveda uses a simplified version of Pichu along with other oil treatments like abhyanga. Above all, this is very effective.

Pizhichil (Kayasekam)

Ayurveda recommends Pizhichil for rheumatic and neurological ailments. For this, the patient lies in a wooden in a tub made of medicinal wood. It begins with applying a slow stream of warm medicated oil all over the body. After that, ayurvedic massages follow. As a result, the body is refreshed and energised.

The treatment consists of keeping the prescribed, warm medicated oil in a leather cap. This leather cap fits around the patient’s head. The medicated oil then fills up the cap up to a level of one finger above the crown of the head.
