In treatment for fertility, when all else fails, the way to go would be IVF or In-vitro Fertilization, a process where the eggs are fertilized outside the woman’s body. So who needs to go for this process? Couples unable to conceive because the man has a low sperm count or a woman whose fallopian tubes are blocked could benefit from IVF and have a child who is biologically related to the parents.

IVF along with Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT) and Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (ZIFT),  accounts for almost 99% of all assisted conceptions. But the chance of success depends upon the woman’s age. In a woman 35 or under, chance of successful conception is 45-50%. Between 35-40 years, it is 28-35%, at 41, the rate is 20% and once the woman is 42 or older, the rate of successful conception falls to a mere 3%.

In vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In this process, a woman’s ovaries are stimulated to produce multiple eggs (if her natural cycle does not produce eggs regularly) and when the eggs mature, they are retrieved using laparoscopy or vaginal ultrasound aspiration. They are then placed along with the partner or donor’s collected sperm in a culture dish in sterile lab conditions, for fertilization. In a matter of 40 hours, the eggs are fertilized and the fertilized eggs, now called embryos start dividing into cells, as the first step towards developing into a foetus. The embryos are then carefully implanted into the woman’s uterus or womb where it will develop into the baby, the whole process having bypassed the blocked fallopian tubes.

Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT)

GIFT is quite similar to IVF and can be used only when at least one of the two fallopian tubes in the woman is normal and functioning. Here, fertilization occurs inside the woman’s body when three to five eggs are placed inside the fallopian tube along with the man’s sperm for fertilization.

Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (ZIFT)

This is otherwise called Tubal Embryo Transfer where the procedures of both IVF and GIFT are combined. The eggs are fertilized in a culture dish under sterile lab conditions and then instead of placing them in the uterus like in IVF, they are placed in the fallopian tube. This can also happen only if at least one of the fallopian tubes is functional.
